Tour of Duty

I’ve ordered a used copy of John Dos Passos’ Tour of Duty. I’ve never read it before and I think now is a great time for it. Americans of my generation–the millennials–tend to take for granted that Europe is stable, democratic, and aligned perfectly with the United States. I don’t remember the Soviet Union at all.

Tour of Duty is my grandfather’s tour of post-World War II Europe, including reporting on the Nuremberg Trials. I think it also contains reporting on the Pacific Theater during the war.

This could be a work deserving of a second look from scholars. It’s never been reissued since the original 1946 edition–to my knowledge.
